Introduction to Take a Moment Welcome to my column! Many of us are caught up with the surface of our lives - too busy earning a living and looking after our families or ourselves to stop and reflect on where we are or where we’re heading. That's why we need to Take a Moment. In this column I will explore and comment on some of the life issues we all grapple with, drawing on my years of work in self-development and experience as a life coach. We live in a high tech world where we are constantly connected to others through email, voicemail and even the Net. Unfortunately we often lose touch with what's in our own hearts. This column is written to help you deal with what is most important to you. A Word about Tanka Poetry has always played a role in helping us express our feelings... and tanka is especially suited for this. This is a poetry form like no other - a lyric five-line verse that captures the power of emotion in a few words. People who do not normally read poetry will immediately grasp the image and the feelings being conveyed. At the center of Japanese culture for more than 1300 years, tanka is now gaining ground in North America in its contemporary English form. I am an award-winning tanka poet published in literary journals worldwide. I will end every column with one of my original tanka in keeping with the theme. I do hope you enjoy Take a Moment, and that it brings a little insight or inspiration your way. Thelma Mariano |
